Set of at 9.55 weather was cloudy walked down to Ennerdale water arriving at the weir at 10.20 and set off along the bank for a simple but pleasant walk reaching Robin Hoods chair at 10.50 where we all had a little sit down !
Robin Hoods chair doesn’t look like a chair and it’s also highly unlikely he ever come to the lake district !!
We continued along Ennerdale water reaching the end at 11.47
Started the gentle but steady climb to Black Sail Hut reaching it at . The girls were looking forward to using the toilet and having a coffee with carrot cake, however unfortunately it was closed!
Still we ate our lunch in the sun on Neils’s ( or Morris as he is now called) Tarpaulin which we found is no longer waterproof !
We left at 2.05 for the steepest climb on the Coast to Coast, up Low Beck. It was certainly steep ! We arrived at the top all hot and sweaty at 2.50 from where we had some fantastic views back over Ennerdale to the sea and also towards Buttermere and Crummock Water. From the top we headed down to Honister arriving at the slate mine at 3.55 where we had coffee ice cream and bought some slate house numbers as well as some “Coast to Coast” coasters ( how sad ! )
Leaving Honister at 4.55 we headed downhill to Seatoller and then onto to Stonethwaite through a pleasant oak forest one of the very view that are encountered on the C2C finally arriving at our accommodation Gillecombe at 6.00pm (it was sunny and warm). We had a very filling supper of Steak Pudding Chips and Mushy Peas at the Scafell Hotel in Rosswaite.
We had a visit to Honister Slate Mine a couple of years ago Mark Weir the owner took us on our tour it was very interesting. Did the big tour incorporating climbing up the outside of the mine. We brought slate back for the garden.
